Urs Ettlin

Management, expertise/valuation, restorations, consignments/purchases, sales

As a child, Urs was able to immerse himself in the world of antiques with his grandfather, and many years later, destiny brought him back to this world.

Perhaps it is the stories an antique can tell, the cultural era in which it was created, or perhaps it is his respect for the quality craftsmanship of years gone by.

He grew up in the Basel region, with roots in central Switzerland. He developed a passion for the mountains at an early age, travelling with his parents and siblings. His carpentry apprenticeship in his backpack drew him to the Engadine, where he eventually settled.

In any case, it is as much a passion as mountaineering. His secret desire as a teenager to become a mountain guide became increasingly clear. The desire turned into a challenge and on 19 September 2001 he reached the goal.

Goals are like peaks and there are many in life. In addition to unforgettable moments in the mountains, he is looking forward to introducing you to the culture of the people in the valleys and their creative power.

Since 2023, he has been involved in a project to educate young people in Zambia:  www.supportmandia.com

The Company

"Urs Ettlin, Antiquitäten & Restaurationen" was founded in 1989 in Samedan. It has been at its current location in St. Moritz since 1995 and was transformed from a sole proprietorship into Antiquitäten Ettlin AG in 2014.

Initially focused on the restoration of antique furniture, the company's activities have expanded considerably over the years. Today it covers the following sectors:

Engadine and Grisons furniture

Still our core competence. Whether it be trading, restoring or appraising. One of the oldest pieces dates back to the 15th century, but we mainly deal in furniture from the 17th to 19th centuries. To become an expert in a particular craft, it is essential to study popular art in general.

Alpine popular art

Antiques reflect the cultural epochs of time and place, and lead the connoisseur to folk art. In addition to the use of wood as a material, these epochs were also characterised by the craftsmanship of copper, pewter, iron, brass and bronze. What better accompaniment to an Engadine chest table than a prismatic pewter jug from Grisons? This explains our second focus on tools, crockery, jewellery and everyday objects from this period.

Swiss Art

Classical paintings, lithographs and historical photographs, mainly from Switzerland/Grisons, complete the range in our shop.

Restoration and renovation

We are passionate about restoring and maintaining objects from the past. This includes the wonderful woodwork in classic Engadine houses. Since 2002, in collaboration with Lain e Lö, Antike Engadiner Holzbaukunst, Pontresina, (extensions & restorations with antique and old wood), we have been carrying out professional restorations of old Engadine woodwork and interiors.
